NYC Restaurants Stand With ‘A Day Without a Woman’ Strike

The organizers of the Women’s March on Washington — held the day after the Inauguration with estimates about 470,000 marchers in D.C. and over 4 million worldwide — have dubbed today A Day Without a Woman. Coinciding with International Women’s Day, the protest is an effort to “act together for equity, justice and the human rights of women and all gender-oppressed people, through a one-day demonstration of economic solidarity.”

Those interested in participating are encouraged to do one or more of the following: Take the day off from both paid and unpaid labor; avoid shopping for the day (with exceptions for businesses that are small and women- and minority-owned); wear red. (There is also a rally taking place inside Washington Square Park today starting at 4:00 p.m.)

Like last month’s “A Day Without Immigrants” protest, restaurants around New York are showing support primarily by making changes in programming or closing.

The Wren (344 Bowery): The Bowery restaurant has given its female staff the day off to attend the rally in Washington Square Park. The Wren’s male staff members will wear red in support.

Casellula (401 West 52nd Street): The Hell’s Kitchen cheese and wine cafe has invited guest servers to take the place of striking female staff members. According to the restaurant, all of the tips generated by guest servers on Wednesday will be donated to Shining Hope For Communities, a organization that combats gender inequality and extreme poverty in Kenya by providing free schools for girls.

Butter & Scotch (818 Franklin Avenue): From the bar and bakery’s Instagram: “We'll be grabbing our ragtag team of feminists tomorrow and joining the rally at Washington Square Park! We'll close from 3:30-8pm and will reopen afterwards to PARTY and celebrate all the badass women in our lives and on our team. We'll also be DOUBLING our regular @plannedparenthood donations for the night, which means $2 from every #WinterOfWomen cocktail you drink will go towards protecting women's healthcare. Come join us!

The following Brooklyn-based bakeries and ice cream shops are donating a portion of today’s profits to Girl Rising, a global campaign for girls’ education: Ample Hills Creamery, Blue Marble, Megpies, The Good Batch, La Newyorkina, One Girl Cookies.

Annisa (13 Barrow Street): Anita Lo’s Village restaurant will donate a portion of today’s proceeds to Off the Sidelines, Senator Kirsten Gillebrand's organization to help more women run for public office.

Espresso 77 (410 7th Avenue, BK; 35-57 77th Street, Queens): From the coffeeshop: “To help empower the next generation of wonder women, we'll donate a portion of all of today's sales to Girls Who Code, a terrific organization that seeks to bring technology into the lives of young women.”
